Responsibility

Responsibility is at our heart

What makes our operations responsible?

Sustainable Travel Finland and Green Key certifications are proof of responsible operations

Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna has been awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label for sustainable tourism as well as the Green Key certificate. Companies and sites that have received these labels are regularly audited, and they are required to take ecological, social, cultural and economic sustainability into account in their operations. Responsibility is a key part of our operations at Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna in Hämeenlinna, and receiving the STF label and the Green Key certification is notable proof of this.

Under the leadership of Osuuskauppa Hämeenmaa, we continuously increase our energy efficiency. What does this mean in practice?

We actively monitor our water consumption and we recycle extensively. Separate energy and biowaste bins are placed in each room, and visitors are instructed to leave other recyclable items – such as bottles and metal items – in the room for the housekeeping services to recycle. Saunas are now heated only in the evenings between 5 pm and 9 pm as necessary. The cleaning agents we use on a daily basis have eco-labels. When a guest stays longer than 24 hours, we don't automatically clean the room during their stay, as saving water and chemicals reduces the environmental burden. However, your room will be cleaned during your stay free of charge upon request.

Travel the city with environmentally friendly modes of transport

We encourage our guests to explore Hämeenlinna by bike by offering Jopo-brand bicycles to their use. They can be borrowed for three hours at a time. Our hotel reception will also be happy to give you tips on lovely cycling routes. We also offer four charging points for electric cars.

Our hotel lobby has a Smart Grow aquaponic indoor garden which combines aquaculture and hydroponics. In this system, live fish, microbes and plants living in a symbiotic relationship form a natural ecosystem that our guests can explore.

Breakfast buffet strives to reduce food waste and favour local producers

We control food waste through self-monitoring and by anticipating the demand for breakfast foods. The environment has been considered in the breakfast service, and we offer an extensive selection of products from local producers. At our hotel restaurant, Le Blason, everything is made from fresh, high-quality ingredients. The restaurant uses only Finnish meat, and offers several organic and local products. Ecology is also considered in dishwashing in terms with the consumption of water and the detergents used.

The well-being of our staff is important to us

We take care of the well-being of our staff with ePassi sports and well-being benefits, first aid and safety training, comprehensive and free occupational healthcare services, and a safe working atmosphere.
