Sustainability at Solo Sokos Hotel Paviljonki

Our hotel has been awarded the Green Key certificate and the Sustainable Travel Finland label. We are committed to taking environmental wellbeing into account in our hotel operations.

What is Green Key?

The Green Key environmental certificate is an international eco-label for the hospitality industry. Companies that are awarded the label undertake to increase the environmental awareness of both its staff and customers, conserve energy and water, and reduce the environmental burden of the hospitality industry, among other things. The label consists of environmental criteria for the hospitality industry, which the company undertakes to comply with, monitor and report on. Green Key motivates both staff and customers to take ecological actions.

We are committed to taking environmental wellbeing into account in our hotel operations. As an indication of this, Solo Sokos Paviljonki has been awarded the Green Key label. Green Key is an international eco-label.

What is the STF label?

The “Sustainable Travel Finland” programme developed by Visit Finland helps Finnish tourism companies adopt sustainable and responsible practices. Companies that complete the STF programme and meet its criteria are awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label, and their operations are monitored and reviewed regularly. The STF label helps consumers identify responsible tourism companies.

Solo Sokos Hotel Paviljonki is one of the first to receive the STF label in its area and the whole hotel chain.

What do these labels mean in practice?

Sorting

Our hotel sorts its waste in accordance with the Waste Act and municipal waste management regulations. We have clear sorting instructions for our guests and staff. Various types of waste can be sorted in the rooms. In its procurements, the hotel avoids plastic and favours recycled materials.

Energy conservation

Most lamps at our hotel are energy-saving lamps or LEDs. Our rooms’ lights and air conditioning are automatically set at energy-saving mode when the room is not occupied. We measure our energy consumption regularly and continuously seek to make it more efficient. Our hotel uses locally produced green energy.

Water conservation

Our rooms have rain showers with Green-Key-compliant water consumption volumes. We monitor our water consumption regularly.

Food products

Our hotel serves local food in our restaurants and at breakfast. Additionally, our restaurant menus have several vegetarian options. We also use seasonal vegetables at all our locations. Our restaurants monitor and actively seek to reduce food waste. We reduce food waste from our restaurant's lunch with ResQ.

Environmental actions

We encourage our customers to choose environmentally friendly transport options! At our hotel, you can borrow our bicycles free of charge for the duration of your stay, and our reception can provide you with a map of cycle paths and information about local nature destinations. The reception also provides tips on hiking and nature destinations in Jyväskylä and the surrounding area. We are also able to advise on local public transport schedules.

Local cooperation

Our cooperation with local companies and educational institutions is diverse. We offer students and schoolchildren traineeships and periods of work experience and have actively participated in student projects related to working life. Our customer gifts include locally produced coffee, tea, chocolate and Kuohu water. We favour local experts and entrepreneurs in the various renovation and repair works carried out at our hotel.

Charity

Every year, we visit the elderly at the local senior housing unit around Independence Day and bring pastries to them. We donate discarded supplies to those in need. We also participate in the annual Joulupuu charity collection before Christmas. We have sponsored an event for a local student organisation, whose proceeds are donated to MIELI Mental Health Finland.

Electric vehicle charging

There are 10 EV charging stations in the parking garage, which you can use during your visit.

Sustainability tips for your visit to Jyväskylä

- Drink clean tap water. Tap water in Jyväskylä is clean and tastes good. There are glasses in the rooms, and water jugs are brought to the tables in restaurants.

- Favour local food at the restaurant and at breakfast. Even if the buffet is full of delicious dishes, first put a smaller amount on your plate and take some more later if you still feel like it.

- Give experiences as a gift or enjoy them yourself. Instead of traditional product gifts, choose gift cards, restaurant dinners, and pampering weekends.

- Hop on a bike or use public transport. Explore our beautiful city, enjoy live music, and visit brick-and-mortar stores and craft shops. There are many second-hand shops in the city.

- Hike nearby Local travel is now in, and there are great hiking destinations nearby. Our reception will know the best hiking routes and tips.

By choosing a Green Key hotel, you promote more responsible and sustainable tourism. Thank you for caring!
