Responsibility
At Original Sokos Hotel Puijonsarvi, we are committed to taking the environment and people’s well-being into account in our operations.
Our hotel carries the Green Key environmental certificate, and we are also a member of the Sustainable Travel Finland programme.
What does responsibility mean for us in practice?
Sorting our waste
Our hotel complies with the Waste Act and municipal waste management regulations. We have clear sorting instructions for our guests and staff. We have waste sorting points on both levels of our parking garage and in the connecting gallery, allowing our guests to sort their waste themselves. Various types of waste can be sorted in the rooms. In our procurements for the hotel, we avoid plastic and favours recycled materials.
Energy conservation
Most lamps at our hotel are energy-saving lamps or LEDs. The lights and air conditioning in our rooms are automatically set at energy-saving mode when the room is not occupied. We measure our energy consumption regularly, and we continuously seek to make it more efficient.
Saving water
Our rooms have showers and taps that save water and they are compliant with the Green Key Criteria. We monitor our water consumption regularly.
Food products
Our several restaurants and our breakfast serve locally sourced food. Also, the reception shop selection and minibar products offer local products. Our restaurant menus have several vegetarian and vegan options. We also seek to use seasonal vegetables in our foods. Our restaurants monitor and actively seek to reduce food waste through measures such as our cooperation with ResQ.
Environmental actions
We encourage our customers to choose environmentally friendly transport options! At our hotel, you can borrow our bicycles free of charge for the duration of your stay, and our reception can provide you with information about local nature destinations.
Local cooperation
We cooperate with local companies in many ways. The reception shop sells products from Kuopio-based artists and the breakfast includes local delicacies. The hotel rooms and corridors are decorated with local art. We also work with local educational institutions and offer students traineeships and TET work experience positions.
Charity
Each year, we make donations to local charity organisations. We donate goods such as bedding, furniture and other fixtures we no longer use. PeeÄssä Cooperative Society supports the hobbies and leisure time activities of children and young people.
Responsibility tips for our guests:
• Save electricity by turning off lights and electronic devices when leaving the room. If you are staying for more than one night, you can ask for no mid-stay cleaning, saving both energy and water.
• Favour local food at the restaurant and at breakfast. Even if the breakfast buffet is full of delicious dishes, first put a smaller amount on your plate and take some more later if you still feel like it. We also recommend you try the vegetarian and vegan dishes in our restaurants.
• Borrow a Jopo bike from the reception and explore Kuopio by bike or enjoy the great outdoors of Puijo on foot. In the summer, we recommend the environmentally friendly Biketaxi service.
• The best place to immerse yourself in the jovial Kuopio atmosphere is the Kuopio Market Square, called Mualiman napa (‘the centre of the world’) by locals. At the market, you can buy local souvenirs and sample traditional Kuopio delicacies while supporting local businesses.
Better choices are always in order.
