Responsibility at our work

Responsibility is a part of each of our days

At Original Sokos Hotel Kupittaa, responsibility is part of our daily routine, and we have compiled ways in which we continuously improve the environment.

We strive to promote responsible tourism in every way we can. Here are examples of actions we take daily:

  • The hotel has an appointed sustainability manager who, together with the management team, focuses on the hotel’s sustainability development and involves other staff members in the activities. Responsible action is part of our orientation.
  • We monitor energy and water consumption and continuously strive for their more efficient use. The hotel’s water consumption has been monitored for several years: the water flow in hotel rooms is adjusted to minimize unnecessary water consumption while considering guest comfort.
  • We use locally produced and organically labeled food, products, and services. Through our choices, we aim to strengthen the local economy.
  • We monitor the amount of waste we produce and aim to continuously reduce the amount of mixed waste by recycling and sorting. In addition to mixed waste, we have a collection for organic waste in our hotel rooms.
  • For cleaning chemicals and paper products, we use only environmentally certified products in our daily use. All our hotel rooms are approved by the Allergy Association, and our cleaning staff uses only odorless cleaning agents.
  • Intermittent cleaning is done, and towels are changed in the rooms only upon request. In our lighting, we use only LED lights.
  • Our sauna is regularly timed to be on only in the evenings. We encourage children to practice responsible tourism by providing them with an environmental passport from Onni Orava upon check-in.
  • We continuously strive to reduce paper consumption. Would you like a receipt via email instead of on paper? Checking in with an IPA also helps save paper!
  • We combat food waste in our restaurant by participating in the ResQ application. We add surplus lunches or Deli products to the app that would otherwise go to waste.
  • We encourage our guests to move in an environmentally friendly way! You can borrow our bicycles for free during your visit. Our hotel staff has excellent knowledge of the local area, attractions, and activities.
  • We cooperate with local businesses and educational institutions, offering internships to students and schoolchildren.
  • Everyone, regardless of their background and needs, is warmly welcome to our hotel. Here, every guest is valued equally.
  • In our parking garage, there are 4 charging stations for electric cars. Staff can also provide guidance on the locations of nearby charging points.
  • The windows in our rooms are covered with protective films designed to reflect sunlight away from the room, reducing the need for mechanical cooling in summer.
  • We offer guests benefits, including hotel accommodation and restaurant dishes. Employee safety and expertise are prioritized: our employees receive benefits for work shoes and E-passes, and they are trained in first aid and safety.
  • On our restaurant menu, we also offer vegetarian options. We have minimized the use of disposable and individually packaged products.
  • We treat job applicants, employees, customers, and stakeholders fairly and within the law. We offer comprehensive employment relationships to our employees. In competition, we adhere to good business practices. Procurement is planned, focusing on ethical production, product lifespan, sustainability, and recyclability.
  • We develop our operations with responsibility in mind. We aim to make local or domestic purchases.
  • We keep all our equipment in good condition, from air conditioning to refrigerators, to ensure they operate energy-efficiently.
  • The minibars in our rooms are intentionally left empty.
  • In our lobby, there is a recycling bookshelf where guests can freely take a book to their hotel room or on a train journey!
  • We highlight local elements, for example, through the wallpaper in our rooms. The wall features a map of Turku with QR codes to explore interesting attractions in the city.
  • We do not prepare food from endangered species, always offer vegetarian options, and strive to provide seasonal food. We cooperate with local producers and aim to prepare food from items that would otherwise go to waste.
  • We are also part of the ResQ Club, through which we aim to reduce food waste.
  • We have at least one charity project each year. In 2023, there were two projects: a bicycle trip against school bullying and the Turku University Hospital.

We set annual sustainability goals for the upcoming year in June in conjunction with the Green Key certification.

Our goals for 2024-2025 are:

  • Fragrance-free cleaning agents in pump bottles instead of small individual ones.
  • Implementation of mobile keys.
  • Recycling coffee grounds as soil improvement material.
  • Addition of the MySoda machine to the Superior room selection.
