The story of our hotel
The story of our hotel
The history of the Kupittaa area is long, according to tradition, dating back to 1155. Our hotel's own story dates back to 2020.
Welcome to Original Sokos Hotel Kupittaa!
The Kupittaa area has a long history. According to oral tradition, Bishop Henry converted the first Finnish heathens to Christianity at Kupittaa's water spring during the first crusade to Finland in 1155.
- In the 1550s and 1560s, Kupittaa hosted tournaments and midsummer festivals.
- In the early 1680s, the Kupittaa spring was seen as a fountain of health and in the 1700s, the area's popularity as a spa facility grew.
- The history of Kupittaa also has a dark era: starting from 1760, the Uudenmaantulli area was used as an execution site.
- In the 1700s, the capital punishment was still fairly common, and people were sentenced to death for murder, manslaughter or even theft.
- The actual Kupittaa park was established next to the spa in 1820, as a place for a leisurely stroll for the spa guests.
- In the 1840s, Kupittaa became a popular centre of entertainment, with day-time dances and regular circus and animal-fighting shows.
- In the 1890s, the park's expansion work began, and the park grew with a sports ground and small children's playground, as well as more trees and bushes.
- In 1910, a playing field, bird ponds, and swimming pool were built in Kupittaa.
And now, 110 years later, the area finally got its first hotel. We are a unique and cosy meeting point that accommodates business travellers, families with children, university guests, and sports clubs alike. Our location is ideal for travellers, as we are only a short distance away from the centre of Turku. The area's sports fields, companies, universities, and Finland's largest city park are all within a short walking distance.
Our 196 hotel rooms guarantee a peaceful break or quiet working space in the middle of busy Kupittaa. The stylish rooms have been furnished with individual touch. The main colour scheme of half the rooms is dark, whilst the other half is light. The light rooms have been highlighted with orange and the dark ones with turquoise. The hotel's interiors were designed by Gullstén-Inkinen Design & Architecture, while the interiors of Bistro Elli and the lobby by Kudos Dsign.
We are a responsible hotel. We are careful with energy and water. We recycle correctly. We do good deeds every day, such as donate one euro of each bottle of spring water we sell to the protection of the Baltic Sea.
We have various options for food. Our hotel's cosy Bistro Elli was named after the legendary Elli & Gunnar dance venue and restaurant. In addition to dining, Elli's environment attracts customers for a social evening with cocktails. You can enjoy delicious bistro meals with a modern twist at Elli, or the best local beers and house wines. Elli also serves the hotel breakfast for both the hotel guests and neighbourhood.
The 9th floor Kuppis Rooftop Bar opens to a magnificent view over Turku. Its terrace is open when the weather permits it, and the intimate indoor bar serves all year round. You can find the hotel's sauna and gym facilities on the same floor. From the Deli by our reception, you can grab a quick pizza slice, coffee, or other take away products.
Bistro Elli has a comfortable function room that seats 48 for a meeting or meal. You can host events for up to 75 people on Elli's open loft. We also cooperate closely with the nearby Visitor and Innovation Centre Joki, where you can find versatile meeting facilities for different groups and needs, within a walking distance from the hotel.
We are close to heart. You are welcome to stay overnight, work, enjoy a sauna, spend your free time and, most of all, have a great time!
